Tummy time

Tummy time is an important practice to help newborns develop muscle strength in the neck and back area and improve movement coordination. This practice consists of letting the baby spend time on a mat on his tummy, under supervision, when he is awake and active.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a reputable American medical institution, tummy time helps develop the strength of the muscles in the neck, back and shoulders of the newborn. This allows him to lift his head, sit up and roll over, making important progress in motor development. Furthermore, the practice in question can help prevent the flat head (Plagiocephaly) of the child and promote balanced muscle development.

According to a study published in the journal "Pediatrics", babies who regularly spend time on their tummy show better motor development than babies who don't. Additionally, research has shown that babies who don't spend time on their tummies may have motor development delayed and may take longer to reach developmental milestones.

But how to make tummy time fun and stimulating for the baby? Dr. Tanya Remer Altmann, a pediatrician and author of parenting books, recommends using toys during tummy time. For example, infants can play with colorful toys that help stimulate the senses and encourage grasping and fine motor control.

Furthermore, the position on the stomach can be varied, for example by placing the baby on a mat with a slight inclination, in order to make him more comfortable . The parent's position can also be varied, such as sitting or kneeling next to the child, to encourage interaction and play.
